Having a family member or loved one living abroad as a refugee can be stressful and heart-wrenching. IslamicFamily can help you sponsor a refugee to come to Canada. IslamicFamily is a federally-approved Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) able to help families privately sponsor refugees. We help people with strong connections to the Edmonton community become sponsors.
Eligibility Criteria
- Sponsors must submit the application on behalf of a refugee; we are not able to take applications directly from refugees
- Sponsors must be living in Edmonton
- Individuals being sponsored must meet the fundamental eligibility criteria and definition of being a "refugee"
- Sponsors must not be on income support and must demonstrate the ability to financially support the refugee applicant(s)
- This is not an immigration application
Please Note: our Refugee Sponsorship Program is meant to assist individuals who do not have better sponsorship alternatives (ex: Group of Five, Immigration, etc.) While IslamicFamily does not handle these applications, we can direct you towards resources to help with these applications.
Timeline & What To Expect
Last year, IslamicFamily received an overwhelming 140+ applications (490+ individuals) from families wanting to sponsor their loved ones. From those, we were able to approve 77 individuals.
The sponsorship application window will be open for a one-month period. After this time, all applications will be reviewed by a committee of community members who will assess applications based on the urgency, timeliness, viability of the refugee case, and the sponsors’ financial and social ability to support the case. This process will take several weeks.
Successful applicants will be contacted by IslamicFamily staff to follow up with the next steps, and help support and prepare families for their loved one's arrival. If your application is successful, please know that it may take 2+ years for the application to be processed by the Federal Government. Sponsorship is not guaranteed and can be complicated due to numerous external factors. Applications that don’t proceed to sponsorship will have the opportunity to re-apply during the next sponsorship window.
